Customized Sambal Prawn

Sambal prawn paste and sambal belacan paste is something that is readily available in Shanghai. Something which I can easily purchase from Parkson. But here in Beijing, it's not that foreign friendly. Maybe not many Malaysians over here. Parkson Beijing did not sell these stuffs.

In a desperate attempt to cook sambal prawns, I bought whatever southeast asian paste that I could find in the foreigner section. I bought the Singapore fried meehoon paste instead.

I was working from home today and decided to try out the new paste. I added some cili padi to the taste while stir frying the onions with the paste before adding in the prawns.

It turns out pretty well. The taste is good... not bad at all.

Seems like I can workaround my environment and customized my sambal prawn. I will be in Shanghai in November and I will make sure I stock up some Malaysia cooking paste.

Best Bakuteh in China

Yesterday, I went to try out a new bakuteh restaurant in Beijing, claiming to be authentic Malaysian Bakuteh.

Ok... I must say... it's the best bakuteh I've had in China. Of course... it comes second after my own bakuteh which is no doubt the BEST!! Muahahah! No other bakuteh in Shanghai restaurant could match this.

Even the presentation is similar to those that we find in Malaysia. The taste could not match those good ones back home, but it's good enough for people living abroad who wants good bakuteh. I will say that it's even better than certain bakuteh we find in Malaysia.

We ordered a lot and all habis makan. This was the second bakuteh I had in Beijing, the first one was own cook bakuteh last weekend, and that was still the best! Heheh.

Now I know where to go for a good bakuteh in Beijing. Yay!

Local vs Foreign Taste

Last weekend, I bought my Dad who is here for a visit in Shanghai to a Singapore restaurant and ordered Roti Canai for him. He has been craving for one after a week of chinese food.

Many of my Malaysian friends who work here, including myself, agreed that the roti canai that we can get here taste much better than those back from home. The reason being that they are thinner, crispier and thus, the feeling of having that crispy roti canai in our mouth makes it taste much better than those we get at local mamak stalls.

I asked my Dad what he thinks of the roti canai, and to my surprise, he agreed that it was much nicer than those back home. Coming from someone so Malaysian and a fan of local mamak roti canai, there is truly no doubt that Roti in Shanghai taste much better than the Roti from Malaysia. That is why I always tell my friends that I do not crave for roti canai, because I can get better and tastier ones here. Haha!

My Belated Valentine Post

2009 Valentine's day was not celebrated with my Hubby. Dear Hubby was away for work this year and so I spent it with.....

Friends who has no where better to go or no one better to spend valentines day with ... hahahaha!

I cooked bakuteh, curry chicken and some vege while Deisy contributed her pork chop. We even had red bean soup for dessert.

Keng Fei and Winston contributed a lot. They cooked chilli eggs!!! Well... they almost blow my kitchen apart. Imagine two guys trying to cook one dish...the situation is so intense. They poured oil into the wok halfway through frying the chilli. But they pulled it through and made good food!! A big applause to both of them :)

After makan, we played 'in between' and made hell a lot of noise and screaming.

I lost about RMB250 to these 2 guys...

It was a very different Valentine's day for me and all of us. We all had fun! Cheers.... and Happy Valentines Day!!

Seremban BBQ Crab Dinner

Yesterday, I went to Seremban to enjoy my favourite Seremban 'Siew Hai' (BBQ Crab). I love the way the crab was prepared - deliciously finger lickin' good! We had a table of 15, my family, Yenli's family and Ah Ku's family.

Here is a picture of Yenli posing for my supposedly candid shot.

Family photo time! I must say that having dinner was really fun with so many people around, though it was a bit crampy. We ate, drank and laughed.

Lou sang time!!! Table was in a mess after this.

Then came my favourite dish.... Seremban Siew Hai. Yummy!!! We also ordered salty egg yolk crab as well, but nothing beats the BBQ crab.

Picture taken with my cousin sisters, Mei Mei and Ying Ying.

The real reason behind this dinner was to celebrate Raymond's birthday. He turns 30th this year. After dinner, we went back to Raymond's house for birthday cake and a bottle of whisky.

Me and August, Yenfang's baby who was named after the month he was born. He is so adorable!

Tiring Day

Yesterday, I woke up early in the morning and head down to Seremban to have breakfast with my Grandma. Saw Grandma and am glad that she is healthy and fine. She fell down a couple of days ago from the stairs and thank God nothing serious happened.

Here is picture taken with Grandma.

At noon, cousin sisters Yenli and Yenfang came to my house to pick me and mum up. We headed to Klang to try the 'dry bak kut teh'. Good food... happy moments.

Here's me and Yenfang.

Mum, Yenli and my aunt.

We headed back to Yenfang's bf's house and took some pictures of her sporty Fairlady Z. Nice car!

Yenfang... kereta banyak kotor... pegi cuci!

Three leng luis and a beautiful car...

It was a tiring day for me, but good and fun despite me having sakit perut because of too much food!

Sinful Treat

Today, I had a sinful treat... Haagen Dazs Royale Fondue. Me and Hubby first went to karaoke, sang for 3 hours and then head to Haagen Dazs for a cold winter treat.

Sweet and Sinful... I was really full and totally left no room for dinner. Time for strict diet next week. :)

2009 New Year

Happy New Year!! My first post for 2009.

On new year's eve, I was still at work around 5.30pm. Dear Hubby was on leave for the past 2 weeks and he prepared a new year's eve dinner for me. I had a surprise when I got back home... this was what I saw:

I could never imagined that he would have done this so well. All the vegetables, tofu, cuttlefish was cut up nicely, and all arranged perfectly on the table. I could not have done this better! I am so proud of my Baby.

We just a simple hot pot dinner, watched some TVB series and saw Sydney's 2009 countdown on television at 8pm. Sydney's countdown was really good. Reminds me of 2008 HK countdown.

2009 started off simple, quiet and homely. Not sure whats in it for me in 2009. I hope it will be a good one but even if it turns out not as expected, I will try my best to make the best out of it.

Welcome 2009!! **Applause**

My Christmas Eve Dinner

My X'mas Even dinner was not a romantic candle light dinner at a fancy restaurant, nor an expensive countdown dinner at some fancy bar or hotel.

It was a special dinner specially prepared by my Dear Hubby! He was on leave and spent the day shopping and preparing to cook for me.

He cooked green pepper beef, stir fried choy sum, chicken herbal soup and made some red bean soup for dessert.

It was a really good dinner and it has been a long, long time since I last had a dinner prepared by my Baby. Yummy! Though it was no fancy dinner, it was the best X'mas eve dinner I've had in years! Love my Baby!

Breakfast Nasi Lemak

Suddenly, I am craving for breakfast Nasi Lemak.

I used to work in a place where ocasionally, we would get emails in the morning with subject like "Nasi Lemak in the pantry". We always wonder who is so generous to treat the whole company nasi lemak. I missed those times. The only places I could find nasi lemak is at Singapore or Malaysian restaurant, and those are not even close to the types we get back in KL.

I think I will go find some nasi lemak for dinner later.

Tau Sar Peah

My friend Wee passed a box of Penang Ghee Hiang Tau Sar Peah to my Hubby back in KL for him to bring back to Shanghai for me.

I could not remember when was the last time I ate this back in Malaysia and I totally forgot the existence of this delicious biscuits. I took a bite of it and don't remember it tasted so good before... I fell in love with the Tau Sar Peah.

I almost finished the whole box in just a few days... and I refused to let my Hubby eat it... haha! My next item on my to-buy list when I return to KL... Ghee Hiang Tau Sar Peah!

This is not a paid post... I am truly in love with my Tau Sar Peah now. Mmmmm.... it tasted so, so good! Thank you Wee... for giving me this unforgettable gift. :)

My Most Sinful Meal

Like it or not, my hairy crabs has no way to escape their destiny; to end up in my stomach.

Instead of leaving them to die a painful death in my fridge, I ended their misery in a fast and quick way; in a wok of boiling water.

I cooked them in the most simple and original way - Steam! I placed a few pieces of ginger on top of the crabs and placed them with their backs facing downwards so that the roe will all be collected on the shell.

Steam it for 20 minutes and they've turned into bright shades of orange and ready to be served.

Gosh... look at the amount of thick reddish roe. Yummy Yummy...

This must be my most sinful meal... killing these hairy creatures and eating those fatty and cholesterol filling roe.

Should I Kill Them?

This is my fridge.

Inside my fridge, there is something.... can you guess what?

They are 4 little hairy crabs, brought to my home by EC. He bought them from 阳澄湖 and he happily gave me 4 creatures and expects me to murder these cute little creatures.

See how adorable they are... their names are Eeny, Meeny, Miney and Moe.

See how hairy these creatures are... they are so adorable that I was thinking to keep them as pets than eating them.

I wanted to cut them loose, but I was told that these are ferocious creatures and can get really aggresive. So the string stays.

So how? Should I murder them? Perhaps I will keep them as pet... I am a Cancerian anyway, and these crabs are sort of like... Family. Kekekeke! I think my insomnia is making me go nuts!
