The Eye

Few weeks ago, I watched the movie The Eye. Remember the HK version starring our very own Angelica Lee Sin Jie, where she won best actress for this movie? The version that I watched was the US version, starring Jessica Alba. I don't know why but when Hollywood tries to remake any HK or Japan hit movie or horror movies, they seemed to have failed.

The Departed, which is a remake of HK's very famous Infernal Affairs (无间道) failed miserably. That's my opinion. That movie is just bad. Perhaps I kept comparing it to the originals when I was watching it. The same thing it is for The Eye. This US version is not at all scary. Here is why:
  • Jessica Alba stays in a very modern apartment, and the surrounding is not at all scary. Angelica Lee stays in a old, rundown flat in HK, and the surrounding itself is eerie.
  • The boy who lost his report card - there is something not right about this little boy. He is just not sending chills across. No scary. Maybe it's the bright apartment effect.
  • Remember the famous lift scene, where Angelica could see the reflection of the ghost? Jessica's lift was so modern, that it doesn't feel scary at all.
  • Somehow the hospital was not scary too... again, they made it too modern.
  • They changed the part where Angelica saw a ghost licking the roasted duck in the Chinese restaurant. This was replaced with Jessica in a cafe, with a ghost storming through her (similar to the the part where Angelica was learning calligraphy, and a woman spirit stormed through her). Now this is the only part where I thought it was the scariest.
Overall, this movie truly lacks creativity and everything comes from the original HK version. Jessica Alba should not have taken this role. It's just awful. I truly think that US Hollywood should stick back to their original horrors such as What Lies Beneath, Sixth Sense and The Others. Those who have seen the original movie should stay away from this one!

08.08.08

Today is a special day. 08.08.08 Many people are getting married today and in China, the Beijing Olympics starts tonight at 8.08pm. I set my morning alarm to wake up at 8.08am this morning. Nah… joking. I’m not that crazy about this number.

I asked my colleagues if they were excited about the games and to my surprise, many of them don’t even care. The answer that they gave me was: “Maybe Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao cares, but not me”. Many of them are hoping for this game to be over soon, and I can understand why. China has imposed heavy security just for the Olympics. Deliveries of parcels are delayed; security checks at subways, all stalls at subway stations are closed for this period, etc. There is just too much hassle.

My Project Manager has arranged for a pre-olympics team session today, and we could go home after lunch. Silly arrangement… I’d rather stay in office than go out for some pre-olympics game under the hot summer sun. He must be cuckoo!

Anyway, I’m gonna glued myself to the TV tonight at 8pm to watch the Olympics opening. I think it’s gonna be a good one. Happy Olympics everyone!

A Night Full of Killers and Food

Last Friday, I went for dinner with my colleagues and again, we played the ‘Killer’ game. This game is very popular in China and I somehow find it very interesting as well. Some people can really play this game and gave very convincing comments about who he /she thinks is the killer. I admire how some of them can analyze to such level of details whereas I don’t really know how to read their actions and comments.

Anyway… we had eat-all-you-can Japanese, and this is the best one I have had in Shanghai. Very nice sashimi, sake and plum wine. I had 7 glasses of plum wine and plenty of sashimi and crab.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

the oysters...

the plum wine...

the Yakitori...

the assorted sashimi...

the Kani...

the eaten Kani... (I had too much of these)

the leftovers...

the leftover Takoyaki ball...

the citrus...

the seafood soup...

the Sake...

the liquor...

the Judge...

the Killer...

Very fun night... ate a lot, drank alot, laughed a lot, talked a lot. Went home sober and happy.

Wow! I can't believe it! This morning, I went to the pantry and I see this:

My dead plant is alive and growing healthy now!!! It's a complete new plant. I don't intend to bring this back to my desk, else it will die again once I touched it.

Am serious. I don't know what's wrong with myself. The plant from the next cubicle crept into my cubicle. It should not have move that close to me. Look what happened to it....

Take a closer look to what has happened.... the leaf is dying!!!

OMG!!! Yeee.... I am a plant silent killer....

Nicole's Bday

Last Friday was Nicole's Bday. Since this is the first year she is celebrating bday without a bf, I rushed to Pudong straight after work to have dinner with her. I was her acting bf la. Ok la... we still have EC and Winston who joined us later, so they officially became her acting-bfs.

We had cantonese cuisine. I told Nicole that bday should have noodles... so we ordered seafood noodles, and it was really a good one!

What do you do after dinner when you're out with a karaoke king and queen? Of course.. our normal ritual. K-session at Party World!!!

I bought Nicole a birthday cake so we could sing her a birthday song and she could make a wish. Actually, could have bought a nicer cake, but this was the last cake available. They even ran out of candles and I took a 'No.1' candle, which was meant for a 1 yr old kid. It's ok though, Nicole can be young again. :)

The 3 singers, EC, Bday Gal Nicole and Winston.

And here's Nicole making her B'day Wish.

We all had fun that night. Sang till 1am. I believe Nicole too, had a very Happy Birthday in Shanghai :)

Cheating Spouse Part 2

Ok… so you caught your hubby / wife with another person in bed. You reacted the way you did, and stormed off. But after a while, you cooled down and it’s time to get things settled. You need to talk to your other half.

I do not know how or what I will do if I am really in this situation. If we don’t have kids, decision will probably be easier, that we go our separate ways. But if we have kids, there’s a high chance that I will still leave him, taking my kids with me.

When these happen, things will never be the same again, definitely! How could you still live the normal life as before when you knew your spouse had had an affair out there? It doesn’t really matter if he / she has ended it because our trust has been broken.

However, I do know a few couples who stayed married and living under the same roof because of their kids. One couple whom I know are not sleeping on the same bed anymore, doesn’t really talk much except for matters related to the son, and has been like this for the past 6 years. The person who had the affair was the wife. As I know from other friends of ours, the husband never had another girlfriend but just devoted himself to work very hard each day. I am not sure if his wife is still seeing the other man, but from sources, yes she is. OMG! How can the hubby take all this and still remain married to this woman? I was thinking… why bear all these sufferings this way? Can’t they just end it?

Another couple that I know, same thing happened. The wife had an affair out there, the hubby found out, and the wife suggested a divorce. But the hubby does not want to leave. Until today, he was still hoping that she will return to him! OMG!! There is still such man existing in this world! I can’t believe it.

So if you’re under this situation, what do you think you will really do?

A Sweet Day

This year, my Birthday started off with insomnia. I didn't sleep until 4+am. Can't sleep and was falling sick. I thought it was a bad start. Every year, I get 1/2 a year of happiness and 1/2 a year of sorrow. It has always been the case.

At office, it started out normal but I get a lot of birthday wishes, thanks to Facebook! Even my Project Manager, Mr. Todd came to wish me Happy Birthday as I am his Facebook friend.

During lunch, I was really touched that the team bought me a cake!! Awww... they really don't have to do this, I really appreciate what they did as it was really sweet.

After lunch, I get 2 surprises. Elizebeth DL sent me a birthday gift!! I was so surprised and happy!!! She sent me an Artist's Edition of Estee Lauder's Pleasures.

And then, I get a call from the reception asking me to come get my flowers. Huh? I have flowers?? Dear Hubby sent me a bouquet of roses!!! Sweet!

Hmmm... a bad insomnia start, but a nice day full of sweetness. Not bad at all :)

Training @ Wine Club

Last Friday, I went for a cross cultural training. This training was held in a very unique and interesting place; a wine club.

A perfect place for a Friday getaway from office, because not only did we had fun, but we also had a lot of wine!

Fresh food were prepared by the host for lunch. The sandwiches were delicious!!

And what did we learn from a cross cultural training? We learnt about the difference between Chinese culture, comparing it to American culture. The reason for this training? Well, as we are dealing with global project, the Chinese had difficulties in communication... and I really mean communication. But they always complaint that the difficulties were caused by the different cultures. I wonder how that affects a working environment. It may a bit, but I still think that language is the major barrier.

Anyway, here are some drawings that we did... Chinese drawing Americans, and American drawing Chinese. Yes, there was an American, apart from the 2 facilitators, in our class. He is our Project Manager, Mr. Todd. I fall into the category of foreigner, and I drew a Chinese. Hehe.

At the end of the session, we had a wine tasting session. We had 8 different wines to taste, enough to get us started... high... hehehe!

We head for dinner at a Sichuan restaurant nearby and the drinking continues.... this time, beer! OMG!!! It was fun and non-stop drinking. I had a few bottoms-up.

After dinner, we went back to the Wine club to watch a performance. It was the worst singing ever! Even Mr Todd thinks so. I thought she was drunk to have the guts to sing in front of so many people with that kind of voice and errr.... out of tone singing. I could sing much better!

High from our alcohol intake... Jane did some salsa dancing with Mr Todd. Woo-hoo...

It was a really fun day. I enjoyed a lot and it was the first time I experienced training with alcohol!!! How effective was that!!

I am a Murderer

I have previously blogged about a beautiful plant I bought from Ikea and how proud I was to place it on my workstation.

I remember blogging about not having green fingers and that all plants will die under my hands.

I was right. My plant is now officially.... almost dead!

I really don't know what to do with it. I asked the office plant supplier and they told me this plant is called 'Thousand Arms Buddha' and it need to have plenty of sunlight and very little water. So I took the plant to the pantry and placed it beside the window. I even asked the office cleaner to help me look after it. She looked after many colleague's plants and they all grew healthy and beautiful. But not mine. Why? Why? Why?

I think I will never, never, ever, buy another plant again. They will all die... I don't want to murder another living thing.

I am so sorry... dear plant... rest in peace. Amitabha.

Cheating Spouse Part 1

You bid each other goodbye and left in separate cars, you heading to your office and your spouse heading to his / hers.

You reached office, had your morning coffee and started your normal daily routine. You realized that you forgot your thumb drive which you saved your work last night while working on your home pc. You told your colleague and boss that you need to go home to get something.

When you reached home, you went straight into the study to get the thumb drive. It was then you realized that you are not alone. You saw your spouse with another person… OMG!!!!!

You just stood there, stunned, not knowing how to react. It has never crossed your mind, ever, that your spouse will do this to you.

--- end of part 1----

Put yourself in that situation… imagine. Tell me what will you do?

An Early Bday Gift

Guess what's this....

It's a pair of diamond earrings. This is my early bday gift. Birthday coming soon and I will be 1 year older... *sob*sob*

This is only 1/2 of a bday gift. I still want a Gucci bag, which Dear Hubby promised. I shall get one while I'm back to KL for vacation in August. Yay!! Hope I will be able to see one that I like and that it will not cost a bomb.

I love the earring!!!

Carrie's Visit to SH

Blogger Carrie & her friends came to Shanghai for shopping and me together with Nicole met up with them on Sunday. This is the first time we meet up.

Our first stop was Qipu Lu, my least favourite place for shopping, but the girls wanted to buy clothes and Nicole says that may be the place with the most cheap stuffs.

Harassment... people following and asking us to visit their shops, asking us if we wanna buy bags, etc... that's one of the reasons I hate that place. As we walked further, Nicole told me that she can see the 'face of regret' on the girls' face. Hahaha! I knew it. Clothes at Qipu lu are really ah chan mui clothes. But, thank God Carrie was able to get something nice at a real good bargain.

After spending just a little time there, I suggested we go Pearl Market. Each time I go to this place, it's gwai sheong san (possessed). I buy accessories like nobody's business. The same thing happened to all the girls... they bought like gwai sheong san. We spent 3 hours there just buying accessories. Someone please stop us from spending more money here!!!

Sorry girls... for bringing you to a place where you spent a lot of money... hehehe.

For dinner, I bought the girls to eat Shanghainese food at 小南国。Here is Carrie, with Sue Ann and Christine.

And Carrie, with me and Nicole.

Some of my favourite cold dishes. The pumpkin lily, vege wrapped in beancurd skin and bamboo shoots. The dishes looked pretty and taste good too.

After dinner, we returned to the Pearl Market to get Chirstine's pearls... ordered to perfection.. hehe. I end up getting some t-shirts and a jewelry box to keep all the growing accessories.

Carrie bought me a little gift from KL to thank me for my time and help. Ah... thats really nice of her. I love the gift!! It was really pretty!!

I helped arranged for a private car to bring them around Hangzhou and to send them to airport. I wonder how was their trip today. Carrie has yet to return my sms.

Hey Carrie, Sue-Ann, Christine, it was fun meeting up with you gals. I hope you've enjoyed your shopping trip in Shanghai and Hangzhou. Take care and see you gals in KL!!
